Poetry Corner

This year my DreamYard Elementary & Middle School poetry students explored their sense of self & its power to revolutionize the world. We wrote Self Portraits as social justice and Praise poems, played with perspective in Persona poems, and deepened our understanding of history, social justice and family in gratitude, heart centered Process poems. When the Indoors is your whole world for a year, it is an opportunity to go Inward to connect with self love and acceptance, and to (re)discover our talents & dreams. It is vital to understand, to appreciate how far we’ve come so that we can fortify our goals to navigate and renew the world by becoming ALL we were meant to be. These poems are from middle schoolers at MS 328 in classes with Noa Bogatch, Amandria Guadalupe and Nacha Nozile.

A group poem called, We Stand With AOC, that students wrote in solidarity with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, which was inspired by their concerns for her after the January 6th insurrection. The poem blends in their lines celebrating the Bronx and how she is a role model for them as well as visions for a better America. It combines themes from their work about celebrating where they are from and questions about America, what this country means to them and the possibilities for this country. The filming took place outside of MS 118.

Bronx Liberation League decided to highlight both someone in their community and their community. We created poems and this flipbook to highlight the joy our people and places bring us. This flipbook is a combination of photography and digital art – our community highlights.
