Using photography and light studies, this class project focused on Bronx material culture through the lenses of norms//rituals// behaviors of young people. How can a material evolve to hold deeper meaning in our lives? Can objects feed our joy, identity and community?

The ACTION Allegiance presents an anthology of poems and inspired line drawings airing out grievances about their year-long topic of cultural appropriation, cultural erasure, and their fears navigating a global pandemic. In this collaboration with the High School Fashion class, we investigate what it means to unpack culture and erasure.

Fashion’s the theme this semester is We’re Still Here. Participants created garments to celebrate belonging and resilience – combating erasure through bold statements that declare our identities. We partnered with Action on their cultural appropriation project to further explore the ways fashion sends the message – We’re Still Here.

Students created Pandemic Memory Jars — filling their drawings of empty jars with the things they’ll most remember about this time, living through a pandemic. The jar serves as a sort of snow globe, memorializing this time in the students’ lives and offering opportunities for sharing and reflection.

Inspired by portraits from artists Jordan Casteel, Mickalene Thomas, Liu, Xiaodong, Alice Neel, Bisa Butler and Kehinde Wiley we explored different styles of portraiture. Students learned basic drawing techniques of proportion, value and color mixing. Students were highly encouraged to add personal elements that reflect who they are.

DreamYard Art Center Minis learned healing through art and what it means to make connections. Join us as we tour our ideal museum to showcase our artwork reflective of the time. They learned to reflect on the pandemic like artists before their time, Jacob Lawrence and Frida Kahlo.

Bronx Liberation League decided to highlight both a person in their community as well as their community. They created poems and a flipbook- a combination of photography and digital art to highlight the joy of people and places of the community.

enterVIEW – a project from the 2020/21 DYP Photo Crew – arranges documentary, light studies and portraits into visual lyrics. Born out of class discussions, the work connects the artists and spaces, observations and actions – all framed in the context of the BX teenage experience.
