FAQ

Who can apply for these programs?

The Legacy Fellowship is open to all college students and college-aged youth from the Bronx. We accept those currently enrolled in college, those taking a break, and those who have chosen a different educational or career path.

Internships are open to high school students ages 14-19 from the following schools and programs: DreamYard Preparatory School, Bronx Collegiate Academy, Bronx High School of Business, Claremont International High School, and the DreamYard Art Center. During the school year, only students over the age of 16 with prior experience are eligible to apply.

If I don’t go to one of the above schools or programs, can I still do an internship?

Unfortunately, we cannot accept high school internship applicants from outside of the above schools and programs. However, if you’d like to get involved in DreamYard’s Art Center programs to become eligible for internships, please visit the Art Center page. Additionally, all NYC high school students are eligible to apply for the community-based Summer Youth Employment Program. Please check with your school leadership for more information.

When do these programs take place?

The Legacy Fellowship runs both October- May, ~10 hours/week, and June-August, ~25 hours/week. Prospective Fellows are welcome to apply for either the school-year or summer session.

Internships run October-March, ~12 hours/week, through the Work, Learn and Grow program, and July-August, ~12-25 hours/week, through the Summer Youth Employment Program. Prospective interns are welcome to apply for both programs.

Where does my internship take place?

The Legacy Fellowship takes place at the DreamYard Art Center in the Morrisania neighborhood of the Bronx.

Internships take place at the DreamYard Art Center, Taft Educational Campus, and a variety of creative organizations across the Bronx and broader New York City.

What kind of work will I be doing?

Legacy Fellows pursue one of two career tracks, depending on their interests: Teaching Artistry or Arts Administration. Within each track, Fellows have the opportunity to explore a breadth of specialties, from various art forms (dance, music, visual arts, poetry, etc.) to administrative roles (program coordination, event planning, community outreach, fundraising, etc.)

Interns pursue one of many “Creative Career Pathways,” depending on their interests. These pathways include Arts & Culture, Media, Innovation, Technology, Entrepreneurship, Education, and Civic Engagement. All DreamYard internship opportunities are designed to honor youth voice, vision, and authentic contributions to the field. To see more examples of intern work, please visit our Internships Gallery.

Can I repeat the program if I’ve done it before?

Participants in both the Legacy Fellowship and Internships are welcome to apply season after season, as long as they are eligible.

What’s the pay rate?

Legacy Fellows earn $18-20/hour, depending on age and years of experience.

Interns earn up to $15/hour, depending on age and years of experience.

How can I make my application stand out?

We want to get to know you! For applicants to both the Legacy Fellowship and Internships, please use the application as an opportunity to represent your authentic self. Read application instructions carefully, answer questions thoughtfully, and let us know why you think you’d be the perfect fit.
