Parent Arts Lab: Unhurt & Rest – Part 2

October 24, 2023 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

BIO: Kay Bell is an Educator, Storyteller and Music Enthusiast. For her, writing works as a birthing floor for healing, invention, and reimagination— where the poetic voice is responsible for both blessing and bruising the inquiring reader. Currently, she works as an Academic Advisor and Adjunct Professor at the City College of New York and can be found nurturing her plants and her two sons, in the heart of the South Bronx.

Unhurt & Rest
is a transformative poetry workshop series that invites participants to explore the profound connection between poetry and personal healing. In the three-part series, participants will embark on a journey of self-discovery through storytelling, emotional expression, and catharsis utilizing the art of poetry. Facilitated by the 2023-2025 Bronx Poet Laureate, Kay Bell, the workshops are designed to provide a safe and nurturing space for participants to express their innermost thoughts through interactive discussions, writing exercises and group sharing. Additional features of the workshop series will include exploring the history and therapeutic benefits of poetry, and learning how it has been used as a means of self-reflection, emotional release and resilience.

Workshop 2 (Oct 24): Unearthing the Language of Emotions

During this session, participants will learn how to articulate and give voice to their innermost feelings through poetry. They will explore different poetic forms and techniques to convey their emotions effectively including, using metaphor, imagery, and rhythm to create powerful and evocative verses. Through guided exercises that will aim to encourage the identifying of emotions, participants will also be encouraged to discover new perspectives and insights, finding solace, and self-understanding in the process.
