Bolstering Student Engagement in Paid Interest-Based Internships This Summer

As founding partners of HERE to HERE with The James and Judith K. Dimon Foundation and Big Picture Learning, DreamYard is thrilled to share the incredible work of HERE to HERE and its network of 8 partner schools, community based organizations, and businesses in bolstering student engagement in internships this summer. With internships available in a wide range of industries—hospitality, healthcare, financial services, the arts and construction—young people will receive the hands-on career and life preparation that’s required to catapult their careers, strengthen their skills, and build their resumes.

Through The Bronx Private Industry Council Task Force, a coalition of Bronx-based companies and organizations committed to offering both mentorship and paid internships to students, young people will have the opportunity to work at companies like Montefiore Medical Center and Wildlife Conservation Society. As a member of The Bronx Private Industry Council Task Force, Montefiore Medical Center will be hiring interns to work in the nursing and administrative departments, allowing our young people to have direct experience in the healthcare industry from the perspective of a clinician as well as that of an administrator. Wildlife Conservation Society will also be hiring interns this summer, each of whom will be supporting visitor engagement and park maintenance at either the Bronx Zoo or Central Park Zoo.

All of these experiences give young people exposure to a variety of fields and jobs, and equip them to effectively navigate their budding careers. Trinity, a rising senior at DreamYard Prep High School (where over 40 percent of our students are signed up for summer youth employment) interned at an AT&T retail location last summer and is excited to return again this year. She recalls learning about the essential components of customer service and sales—from greeting clients with a bright smile to engaging in strategic conversations with customers to identify any opportunities to increase product sales. Trinity hopes to attend college next fall and although she has yet to choose a field of study, she believes she has gained countless transferrable skills from her summer internship at AT&T and feels equipped to navigate her career and college experience.

Thank you to HERE to HERE, The Jamie and Judith K. Dimon Foundation, Big Picture Learning, and the entire network of partner schools, community-based organizations, and businesses that support and build pathways to employment for our young people. And, a huge congratulations to our students for being placed into their paid interest-based internships at:
