In the Spring 2007, Carla Repice, DreamYard visual arts teaching artist, approached Co Executive Directors about her vision to create a program for high school students that focused on creating and exploring art through gallery visits and learning the curation process. In the Fall of 2007, What is Art? began with participants working out of a studio on the campus of Lehman College. The name What is Art? reflected the program's commitment to inquiry and critical awareness through artistic practice. Since 2007, participants have curated and mounted two exhibitions annually, past venues have included Sotheby's, The Bronx Museum of Art and The Pregonis Theater. In addition, participants lead docent tours and workshops, create independent and community-based projects, visit NYC museums and galleries and meet professional artists, historians, architects and curators. In the Fall of 2009, the program was renamed, The Bronx Art Collective (BAC). In the Spring of 2010 B.A.C members will design and paint an outdoor 80 foot mural at the DreamYard Art Center with community members.
