A.C.T.I.O.N. Program Hightlights

  • In the Summer of 2009, participants of A.C.T.I.O.N.'s Revolution and Resistance groups researched the root causes of HIV/Aids, interviewed infected and affected youth and turned their stories into a documentary, poetry and theatre pieces that they performed on the streets of Washington DC. 80 people attended their final summer sharing including representatives from all of our summer partners in the city: GMAD, Project Heat and Lotus. In the Fall they planned and executed The Red Party to help raise awareness of the epidemic in the Bronx. Over 120 teens were in attendance and 80 were tested on site.

  • While in DC the group also performed their poetry and theatre pieces at two Busboys and Poets Cafe locations. After their performance at the Shirlington Virgina location they facilitated a conversation with the audience about their process and the issue of HIV.

  • In the fall of 2009, as part of their A.C.T.I.O.N. programming, participants completed workshops on professionalism, phone etiquette, email and letter writing, and idea pitching.

  • Participants did community outreach visits to promote their Red Party. They visited local groups including Brotherhood Sister Sol, The Point, Lotus, and Boys and Girls Club.

  • The A.C.T.I.O.N. video group participants spent over 50 hrs editing for their documentary Positive on Final Cut Pro.

  • Revolution participant Dilcia Mercedes traveled to Senegal, Africa in the summer of 2009 to learn about sustainable systems and environmental issues.

  • Rebel group member Tyrell Smith become the 2nd A.C.T.I.O.N. participant accepted into the Posse Foundation in the fall of 2008. The Posee Foundation is a college access and youth leadership development program that identifies public high school students with extraordinary academic and leadership potential who may be overlooked by traditional college selection processes and provides them the opportunity to pursue personal and academic excellence by placing them in supportive, multicultural teams—Posses—of 10 students. Posse partner colleges and universities award Posse Scholars four-year, full-tuition leadership scholarships. Tyrell is currently attending Colby College.

  • Rebel group member, Ky-Oeasha Thomas, was selected to be a Tribeca Film Fellow in the Spring of 2009, based on her video work in A.C.T.I.O.N. As a fellow Ky-Oeahsa learned about career opportunities and higher education options in media, worked closely with seasoned filmmakers, and developed new relationships with peers, educators and filmmakers in the field. She also worked with the other fellows to put together Cityscapes, which was screened at TFI’s annual youth media screening, Our City, Our Stories.

  • Rebel group member, Lorena Bautista, was awarded the 1st Annual A.C.T.I.O.N. Leadership award at the Rebel Senior Graduation on April 25th. Lorena was chosen because of her commitment to the program and all projects over her four years in the program. She served as project manager for two of A.C.T.I.O.N.'s most successful community events: We Run This Vote Youth Politics Festival and I Love My Block, the A.C.T.I.O.N.'.s 2nd Annual Bronx Youth Film Festival. Lorena will receive a MacBook for college as part of the award.

  • Rebel Seniors created portfolios to highlight their growth after participating in the program for four years. They presented their portfolios to ACTION staff, participants, and family members before the graduation.
